Get ready to read all night and keep your tissues handy. This is not a pity party. It is the story of love and how love can make people do crazy things all in the name of hope. This book was recommended to me by my friend Linda in Arkansas. She picked a winning title!
"The Light Between the Oceans" by M.L. Stedman covers a lot of ground, but never loses the pacing or the raw emotions. She has included research about lighthouses and the Southern Sea, about World War I, about the dangers of life in Australia.
But all of that is background to the main plot. A childless couple finds a baby. They decide to keep the baby. Because they live on a lighthouse island (Janus Island), who's to know the baby isn't theirs?
Of course the reader is on edge every time someone visits them or they take the child to visit grandparents.
Who has the right to the child? The natural mother or the adoptive mother? Are they to be tried for kidnapping if found out?
This suspenseful novel was a joy to read. That it is Stedman's first novel is amazing in itself.
